Produced by Siobhan McCarthy and Geoff McMurchy at Kickstart Arts, Vancouver, WAM's international curators this year are Caglar Kimyoncu and Julie McNamara. Two disabled artists and filmmakers, Caglar and Julie developed an exciting creative partnership working at London Disability Arts Forum in 1998. Having discovered a shared passion for film and creating new opportunities for disabled filmmakers, they set up the London Disability Film Festival which began at the Lux Cinema in May 1999 and moved to the National Film Theatre (BFI) on the South Bank from 2000 onwards. The Disability Film Festival grew into an exciting cultural event on the annual arts calendar, attracting over 3,500 visitors in their last year at the helm. It became an event to watch out for, achieving international significance and attracting filmmakers from across the globe. The team changed and the funds eked away, sadly the festival closed in 2008. Nowadays they present as a team at a variety of international cultural events working in film and curating film festivals where talented filmmakers with experience of disability are given high profile. Watch out for the forthcoming Wide Angle Media event in Vancouver March 2012 hosted by Kickstart Arts where Caglar and Julie will be guest curators. |
